Sometimes, the good things in life ARE free.
This is where we get our Bill Nye the Science Guy on. So, let’s talk about your hair’s outer layer, the cuticle. The hair cuticle is like the gatekeeper to the insides of your hair. When heat is applied to the hair, it opens up the cuticle much like opening up shutters on a window. This is great when your stylist wants to color your hair or help a hair mask penetrate deeper. So if your hair looks frizzy when you blow dry it, this is why. Your cuticle is wide open for business and gives the illusion of frizz. Typically this is when we go buy products that “reduce frizz”, but guess what? Using a product to eliminate hair frizz is a myth. Yup, go return them all.
So with that information, I’m going to introduce you to the solution. Ever wonder why your blow dryer has a cold shock button? Are you one of the thousands of women who never knew what that was for?
Heat open your cuticle and cold shuts it down. When you blow dry your hair, finish each section with a cold shock for 2-5 seconds (note: it takes your blow dryer about 2 seconds to get cold). This gets the cuticle tight against the hair and that, my friends, creates a shiny surface! I challenge you to cold-shock one side and not the other and see the difference. Bonus: this helps lock in your blowout to last longer ;)
